This is a case based presentation on how pain and discomfort can manifest as behavior problems or make behavior problems worse. Pain is one of the most underdiagnosed physical conditions that contribute to behavior problems. Learn what behaviors pain can look like, tips on how to identify more subtle signs of pain, and how to find out if pain is in fact contributing to the behavioral issues.
Dr. Emily Levine, DVM, DACVB, completed her veterinary behavioral residency at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. She then worked at the University of Lincoln, UK. where she saw patients, taught students, and participated in behavioral research. Dr. Levine then spent 13 years working at a specialty and referral hospital in New Jersey. She opened the Animal Behavior Clinic of NJ in 2020. She has authored several papers in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, as well as co-edited international proceedings on behavior research. She is co-editing the next edition of the BSAVA's Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioural Medicine along with Daniel Mills and Juame Fatjo. She was the first veterinary behaviorist in the U.S. to use digital thermography in helping to assess potential physical areas of concern in behavior patients. She has written an award winning children’s book called Doggy Do’s and Dont’s which helps teach young children (and their parents) how to safely live with dogs and is available on Amazon. She enjoys learning about each pet she sees and their human caretakers! She is co-vice president of Instinct Dog Behavior & Training Company. When not at work or spending time with her family, she enjoys learning ballroom and Latin dance.
